The "Vereins-Mitteilungen" ("association newsletter") served the Jewish religious, women’s and youth associations of Friedenau, Steglitz and the surrounding areas of Berlin’s southwestern suburbs. In volume 2, number 8 (October 1923), the newsletter reported that membership to the religious community in the southwestern suburban area had increased to a "so ansehnlichen Höhe, wie nie zuvor" ("such a considerable amount, like never before") and the association strove to bring the Jewish residents in the district together in a "festen religiösen Einheit" ("strong religious unity"). Indeed, from 1910 to 1925, the Jewish population in Berlin increased from 142,289 to 172,672, before sharply decreasing in the 1930s. The “Vereins-Mitteilungen” contained articles on community activities, such as welfare work and “Unterhaltungsabende” (“evening gatherings”), as well as times for worship services, youth meetings, and religious instruction. The “Vereins-Mitteilungen” also included articles from Moritz Winter (1886-1971), the rabbi and religious instructor for the Friedenau-Steglitz community, and his wife, Ernestina (1890-1929). In 1939, Winter immigrated to Shanghai and then San Francisco with his second wife, Erna. Many of his family members died in the Holocaust.
